This process guide for course developers is based on the FHSU Virtual College course development procedure and the general instructional design process. Although the details of course development are left to the course developers, this process guide can serve as a reference that will guide course developers through the Virtual College course development process at FHSU.

 

                                                              PHASE I. CONCEPTUALIZATION
End product for Phase I: 1) a draft course syllabus, and 2) a Virtual College Course Development and Support Proposal or a Virtual College Course Re-Development and Support Proposal or a Virtual College Faculty Self-Produced Course Development Proposal.

Step 1. Consult with colleagues, Curriculum Committee, Department Chair, Academic Dean or staff in the Virtual College and the Center for Teaching Excellence and Learning Technologies.

·         Determine target students

·         Determine student prerequisites

·         Determine the delivery method(s)

·         Determine technology tools needed for the course

·         Check technical requirements for the instructor and the students

·         Identify course objectives

·         Identify course content (textbooks, content materials, supplemental materials)

·         Identify course components

·         List course resources

·         Identify learning activities

·         Choose assessment methods

                                                 PHASE II. PROPOSAL APPROVAL

End product for Phase II: a signed course development contract (Pathway I/Pathway II/Pathway III) signed by the Course Developer and the Director of the Virtual College.

Step 2. Ask Department Secretary to submit a Virtual College Course Development and Support Proposal or a Virtual College Course Re-Development and Support Proposal or a Virtual College Faculty Self-Produced Course Development Proposal via a workflow in Lotus Notes for approval from the Department Chair.

Step 3. Obtain approval from the Academic Dean

Step 4. Obtain approval from the Graduate Dean if the course carries a graduate credit

Step 5. Obtain approval from the Director of the Virtual College

Step 6. Meet the Director of the Virtual College to sign a course development contract

                                                   PHASE III. DEVELOPMENT AND SUPPORT

End product for Phase III: a complete Virtual College course.

Step 7. Seek support from CTELT if needed

·         Meet CTELT Director to discuss instructional design and support from CTELT if needed

·         Obtain a course shell in the Blackboard

·         Produce multimedia components such as digital images, graphics, animations, audio, or video

·         Use course management system such as Blackboard

·         Use technology tools such as Articulate Presenter, Camtasia screen recording, podcasting, synchronous communication tools, etc.

·         Assist in course testing in the course management system

 

Step 8. Develop the course

·         Chunk instructional content into units, modules, and topics

·         Identify learning objectives

·         Prepare study guides or lecture notes

·         Prepare learning activities

·         Develop exams, answer keys, or other assignments related to assessment

·         Determine whether a proctor is needed for tests

·         Prepare audio-visual materials

·         Obtain copyright clearance if needed

·         Formulate a detailed course schedule

·         Develop informal midterm evaluation and summative evaluation of the course

·         Transfer all content materials to the Blackboard course management system

·         Integrate multimedia components to content web pages

·         Add online resources for instructional content and learner support

·         Build course links within the online course

                                                  PHASE IV. QUALITY ASSURANCE

End product for Phase IV: 1) A generic course syllabus to be put at FHSU website; and 2) A Virtual College New Course Completion Form approved by Department Chair and CTELT Director.

Step 10. Test the course by the Course Developer

·         Check content accuracy

·         Check content display

·         Check internal and external course links

·         Check functionality and quality of individual multimedia components

Step 11. Obtain new course completion approval

·         Obtain approval from Department Chair and CTELT Director

·         Attach a required generic course syllabus to be posted on the FHSU website

Step 12. Receive financial compensation from the Virtual College

·         CTELT Director forwards the Virtual College New Course Completion Form to the Virtual College Faculty Services Coordinator for payment after approval.

·         The Virtual College Faculty Services Coordinator works on the payment paperwork after the approved Virtual College New Course Completion Form is received.
